Health care in the UK is bitter sweet. It is brilliant that we have access to free medical advice and treatments unlike other countries such as America. It is sometimes difficult to actually get an appointment with a doctor however, often waiting weeks to be fitted in. Our health care professionals are excellently trained and provide us with top class care, so how else can we get their advice without having to book a doctor’s appointment? Now I am quite the hypochondriac, but going to the A&E room for anything other than an emergency is just plain silly. So it is a good job that our high street pharmacists are such well trained and professional health care providers.
Pharmacists have the chance to become independent prescribers with the ability to prescribe licensed drugs from May 1 2006. When all the necessary training has been completed, they are known as pharmacist independent prescribers.
If you cannot get off work or have little spare time, having qualified pharmacists able to prescribe medicines to us on the high street is a good development. You will be able to have an appointment with a qualified professional just by going into your high street pharmacy. However it will not be easy to abuse the system just because it is so convenient. You will be asked a lot of questions and asked to show any physical ailments, just as you would with your GP.
Before they are allowed to prescribe licensed drugs, pharmaceutical consultants will go through extensive training. Spotting for substance abuse and recognising symptoms is included in the training that independent prescribers will be given before they are qualified.
Before going to a GP, you should see if your local pharmacists independent prescriber can help you with any medical issues you might have. If you have a very serious problem or need urgent treatment, a pharmacist will refer you to a doctor or emergency department at your nearest hospital. The pharmacists will do their best to get you feeling right as rain again as soon as possible.
