Growth Of Siddha - The Oldest Medical System
Siddha is one of the oldest medical systems in the world. This is a Dravidian medical system developed around 5000 years back beginning with Sage Agasthya and then the 18 Siddhars. Siddhars are spiritual scientists of Ancient India. They were supposed to have supernatural powers. They did intense and years long yogic practices, without taking food or water and aroused the serpent power lying dormant inside the body. They were also able to achieve the eight kinds of supernatural powers with their dedicated yogic practice. With the knowledge they gained, they wrote many books on curing various diseases. They were able to understand the variations of human body from its normal health just by feeling the pulse. This was the beginning of the Siddha Medicine. Siddha medicine has cure to almost all diseases, because these knowledge were gained by the siddhars through yogic practices and control of breathing.
In India, the south Indian State of Tamil Nadu is where the Siddha system is most popular and it’s where this medical system is supposed to have originated. At present, there are over a thousand Govt. Siddha Dispensaries, functioning in Tamil Nadu. Also, there are two Govt Siddha Colleges, five Private Siddha Colleges and the National Institute of Siddha run by the Central Government. In these Siddha colleges, five and half year courses are offered under recognized universities. Other than degree there is also Masters Degree courses.
On 28-02-1968, for the first time in Kerala State, A Govt Dispensary started functioning in Vallakkadavu, after inauguration by the then Health Minister Mr.Wellington. As a result of its vast development, eight dispensaries and one Hospital in Vallakkadavu are functioning in the State. For the first time in Kerala, A private medical college was started and is functioning under the Kerala University.
Even though the Govt Siddha dispensary was upgraded to 20 bedded hospital in 2000-2001, due to the unavailability of basic facilities, the functioning was hindered and was again degraded to a dispensary. On October 2004, due to the intense efforts of the then Senior Medical Officer, Dr.V.Stanley Jones, the dispensary was again upgraded to 20 bedded hospital and started functioning in the building allocated by the then Mayor Prof.Chandra. Even with the lack of basic facilities and medicines, Dr.Jones during his service, uplifted the hospital to its best and made it, one of the busiest hospitals in its class. Dr.Stanley Jones who is a graduate in Siddha Medicine is the senior most registered Siddha practitioner in the state, practicing this wonderful medical system for over 30 years. Dr.Jones’s works for the upliftment of Siddha medicine is beyond words, he put his time and efforts to do many good things for the development of Siddha in Kerala, Dr.Jones conducted three National Siddha Conferences in Kerala on 1987, 1990 and 1997 respectively and he is a special invitee in many Siddha conferences, seminars and workshops which are conducted all around India. His hard works and efforts are behind the sanctioning of the very first Siddha Hospital and Siddha College in Kerala. Dr.Jones has actively conducted free medical camps many times, to help the needy. He continued his good works in the hospital till 2007, when he retired from his Govt. Service. But retirement doesn’t stop Dr.Jones from offering healing and relief to people who visit him seeking cure from their ailments.
After retirement Dr.Jones put up his own Siddha Hospital, the first of its kind in Kerala by the name - Dr.Stanley Jones Siddha Hospital. Dr.Stanley has a strong family background of traditional Siddha practitioners who have been effectively practicing Siddha medicine for over seven generations. The NEWS of Effectiveness of Dr.Jones’s treatment methods has reached everywhere that he not only receives patients from the state, but throughout India and even abroad.
Now in Kerala, Siddha Medicine is only under the growing stage. Some Government Siddha Institutions and one Siddha Medical College are functioning here. The credit goes to Dr.Stanley Jones, as the man behind the development of Siddha Medicine in Kerala.
