A few days of feeling sad or depressed does not mean depression. Depression is a very serious disease that can last for years. Each year about 15 million Americans suffer from this illness. And yet, sadly, only about 1/3 of those people seek medical care. All too often people avoid recognizing or admitting that they suffer from depression because of the negative archetypes associated with mental illnesses. Depression is a progressive illness. It will get worse without treatment. Ignorance in this case isn’t bliss.

A variety of factors, and even combinations of these factors, lead to the many types of depression. Physical and emotional problems, chemical issues, even DNA all play a part. Simple daily life and surroundings are important. Detrimental factors such as stress can lead to it. Complicated diseases like depression aren’t easy to crack. As well, the human brain and its workings are quite complex. To learn how the mind works, doctors and researches are studying it each day. It’s clear that it’s an imbalance of chemical compounds in the brain that creates depression. Researches learn more about this complex series of actions and reactions with passing time. The more we learn about depression the better we can treat it.

There are a variety of medications available to treat depression. Of course the market is full of ‘quick fix’ antidotes. You have to be careful to seek medications that have been clinically studied and have been proven to display positive effects in the treatment of depression. There was a time in our history if you were afflicted by anything that was associated with mental illness you were thrown into a mental ward and lost in the system. Fortunately that has all been changed. The anti-depressant Prozac first came into use in the USA in 1988. It was proven to work, and thus is still prescribed today even though it can have serious side effects.

Since then a new class of anti-depressants has become popular as well. Currently depression is being treated with SSRI or (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) such as Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox. These work even though they too show some side effects. The market is also ripe with herbal medications and treatments. The ingredient in St. John’s Wort extract, heperforin, is present in those that prove every bit as effective as anti-depressant drugs. When this is present in the proper quantity it is a winner. Be careful, do your research and you will find effective depression medications to treat your depression.
